Hello from Miss Mel & Miss Carla!

We are so so excited to be continuing this great PSD tradition!

Live Class

Background Information

The Annual Choreographic Competition is a long standing tradition of the Peninsula School of Dance. The event is a not-for-profit event and all entry monies and admission donations go toward the running of the competition and the purchasing of medals and trophies. Please encourage your child to enter as it is loads of fun and a great experience for the children!

The names engraved on the trophies over the past 30 years of the competition show the beginnings of many professional performers and dancers from the school including Jason Coleman (from So You Think You Can Dance!), Sandra Parker, Chloe Dallimore, Kerry Peters, Sharon Peters, Pauline Allison and Nicole Zafer, along with the names of many of the parents and relatives of current students and teachers at the ballet school including Shelly Gadsby, Joanne Parker, Sharlene Romanoff, Kirsten McKay and Nicole Walker.

How Will It Work?

*NEW DATES – PLEASE KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR INBOX, INFO COMING SOON! MORE TIME TO CREATE!*

Here’s how the competition will run this year:

  • Competition will open on TUESDAY 12TH MAY.
  • Entry fees – $15 per entry. Click the button at the top of this page ‘Click Here To Enter’. As this is a not-for-profit event, the entry fees cover the cost of the adjudicator, medals, trophies etc. In previous years, the audience entry fees help cover these costs, but unfortunately this is not possible this year. We hope you enjoy viewing everybody’s videos.
  • Students MUST be enrolled with PSD ie. hold a current online membership to be eligible to enter.
  • Students will be required to upload their videos to above Google Drive folder. Click the button ‘Click Here To Upload Videos’ at the top of this page. This must be done by 5PM SUNDAY 28TH JUNE.
  • Winners will be announced LIVE date and time TBC! All medals, certificates, trophies etc, will be given out once we can return back to the studio. We will keep them safe for you!
  • Students will have a time limit of 2:30 minutes. (The item may be LESS than the time allowed and must NOT be exceeded.)
  • You can still choreograph duos/trios/groups!! Obviously not in person, but we would love to see your editing skills and you can pop your videos side by side, in boxes etc.
  • Each competitor will receive a written report for their work, medals will be awarded to the place getters and Junior, Intermediate and Senior Trophies, three in each section awarded to students showing outstanding Choreographic, Ballet and Stage abilities and qualities. Please note: if entering a duo/trio/group, just the choreographer will receive medal. Other students will receive a ribbon.
  • You can now book a studio for filming! The studio will be open on Saturday 27th June to film if you need extra space. The book and to pay please see links at top of this page

Students can choreograph solos, duos, trios or groups in one or more of the following categories:

Classical A dance without story or props, based on classical ballet syllabus, to a piece of classical music.
Demi-Character  A dance based on the classical syllabus and tells a story or depicts a person or a thing; e.g. a butterfly, fairy, bumble-bee, nymph, red riding hood, or anything you like.
Jazz/Hip Hop Can incorporate a wide variety of dance styles including the latest funk and hip hop moves through to dances from eras gone by such as disco, rock n’ roll and numbers from Broadway musicals.
Contemporary A modern form of classical dance which permits a greater range of movement that are beyond the strict body lines set in classical ballet technique.
Tap  A style of dance distinguished by percussive footwork that marks out precise rhythmic patterns on the floor using tap shoes

Improvisation

(Ballet) Recommended for our Petite and Sapphire students!

Improvisation is a free, seemingly unstructured, less technically strict and impulsive form that draws inspiration from everyday dance practices and influences. Students must use song we have provided – you can find the song at the top of the page! Students are welcome to use a prop eg – a scarf, fairy wand etc***
Song & Dance A style of dance which incorporates singing and dancing.

***We highly recommend this for our younger students (Petite and Sapphire level students) as an excellent introduction to the choreography experience. We regularly practice improvisation during classwork so the children are very familiar with this approach.

PLEASE MAKE SURE MUSIC HAS APPROPRIATE LYRICS, NO SWEARING ALLOWED. YOU CAN EASILY FIND LYRICS BY DOING A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH.
