Alex is our resident contemporary, choreographic, improvisational and technology enthusiast, who is both a student and teacher here at Peninsula School of Dance. Alex started dancing at the age of two with Dwan Lith, a student of Sandra Allan, quickly falling in love with ballet and contemporary dance. She is now especially passionate about choreography, working with young people and arts management and in 2016 founded her own youth dance organisation, Spark Youth Dance Company.
During her years at high school, Alex took on many leadership roles including School Captain and co-choreographed two award-winning productions for Australia’s school story-dance competition, Wakakirri, in 2014 and 2015. Alex has choreographed many full-length and short dance works with Spark – involving many of PSD’s own students including; a fresh WW1 take on ‘The Nutcracker’ (2016), ‘Shatter’ (2017) – a dance work about the British Suffragettes with live orchestra, ‘Ariadne’ (2018) – a Greek mythical tale and a modern retelling of an old fairytale, ‘Snow & Rose’ (2019). She has toured Victoria twice with the company and full orchestra and has also choreographed a number of short works for Spark’s youth choreographic seasons. Her work in ‘Shatter’ was nominated for an Australian Dance Award in 2018. Alex’s film credits include a short film about youth mental health called ‘Shelter’ in 2017 and a large-scale film called ‘LIMITS’ which was created in 2020 during Melbourne’s second lockdown with a group of isolated young people.
Alex has also choreographed works that have been showcased at the Victorian Dance Festival and at the A Woman’s Place Festival. She regularly speaks at various events including the Victorian Government’s inaugural Youth Summit in 2017 and Wakakirri’s Career Days. She is also the Founder and Director of Arts at Twilight, an arts festival presented each Summer at The Briars showcasing the performing arts under the stars.
As a dancer, Alex has received further study at Deakin University and participated in Transit Dance’s inaugural Origins contemporary dance program in 2016, as well as completing VCE Dance and being invited to audition for Top Class. She is currently working towards her Advanced 2 Cecchetti Ballet exam.
A proudly neurodivergent artist and teacher, Alex brings her love of storytelling and expression through the arts to her classes at PSD. Alex loves the deeply caring community that is Peninsula School of Dance and She begun her PSD journey in 2017 and has loved every second guiding and nurturing her students to be the best young people they can be – both in class and in life.
